Beschrijving: Finlandia Newsreel 444 is a summary of the events during 1959. President Urho Kekkonen meets with Soviet leaders in Leningrad after a crisis in relations between Finland and the Soviet Union that began in late 1958. U.S. Foreign Secretary Foster Dulles resigns in April and is buried in May. Japan’s Crown Prince Akihito and Michiko Shoda, a commoner, wed in Tokyo, and the Finnish unofficial Roma king’s son, Allan Hagert, and Tuula Saarto marry in the Lutheran Cathedral in Helsinki. Foreign officials visit Finland, and Finnish officials pay visits abroad: Chief of Defence, General K. A. Heiskanen in Moscow, Soviet military delegation and Deputy Prime Minister Mikoyan in Finland. Icebreaker Moscow is launched at the Hietalahti Shipyard in Helsinki. Large gardening exhibition at the Helsinki Exhibition Hall. Veikko Eskolin’s artwork astounds. President Ståhlberg’s statue is unveiled, and the new buildings of the University of Turku are inaugurated. Kustaa Vilkuna and Uuno Klami are the newest members of the Academy of Finland. Birthdays: Ilmari Kianto, 85, Hannes Kolehmainen, 70, Väinö Kokkinen, 60. Sports events: Juhani Järvinen is World Champion of speed skating and elected top athlete of the year. Finnish Women’s Physical Education Association SNLL arranges a gymnastics performance in Pori; Finnish Workers’ Sports Federation TUL holds its 5th anniversary celebrations at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium; Risto Luukkonen wins the European light-weight boxing championship; the pesäpallo (Finnish baseball) finale between the East and the West is a draw; and the Finnish team wins the Nordic table tennis championship for mixed doubles. The Finnish Automobile Club holds a classic car parade. On 17 August Paul Anka performs for an enthusiastic audience of 25,000 at Linnanmäki amusement park. Tino Rossi also performs there. The world’s most expensive hat; upper secondary school students celebrate their last day of school on the Esplanade. Sunny May Day; university students raise funds to further economics education; and take part in a torch procession. The Christmas street opens; Lucia Day. Nikita Khrushchev’s famous visit to the United States.
